It is important to note that our servers, like all public internet facing servers, are under a constant barrage of probes and attacks. Protecting against such attacks is an important part of the service we provide as it creates a stable and reliable hosting environment. One such attack is called a POP Flood Attack that can hamper s server's ability to properly serve clients. As the name implies it 'floods' the recipient server with POP connections and gradually consumes more and more server resources until it can no longer cope with the flood. To protect against such attacks our servcer monitors the number of POP connections form individual IP addresses. If the threshold is reached then the IP is temporarily blocked for a specified duration of time. Note this is temporary block. Symptoms of this kind of block are the sudden, but temporary, refusal of all connections to our server. This means you can no longer receive or send emails (if you use us as your SMTP server) and can no longer see your website but the rest of the internet is accessible. To prevent this kind on interuption of service it is important not to let the server think you are a potential attacker. You do this by ensuring you are not POP'ing the server more than 60 times an hour. We allow 1 POP connection per minute so if you set your automatic 'check email' options to every 5 minutes you will be safe from this sort of incident and it will giv eyou plenty of opportunities to 'manually' check for new emails.
